Should I Repair or Replace My Water Heater?

We at AquaTech Duluth Plumber know that most homeowners eventually have to make a tough choice when their water heater stops working or malfunctions. Do I repair or replace my water heater? At AquaTech Duluth Plumber, we clearly explain your options and the pros and cons of each choice. We generally suggest that if your water heater is near the end of its life, typically around 8-12 years old, then we recommend replacement as chances are high that it will soon have other parts start to fail and could end up costing as much as a replacement. If your water heater is relatively new, check to see if it is still under warranty! Email us at jadin@aquatechduluth.com for more information.

Leaking Water Heater Diagnosis Tips

If the floor is wet around your water heater, there could be many causes. It could be anything from a minor issue to replacing your water heater. At AquaTech Duluth Plumber, we recommend diagnosing the cause using the following steps:

  1. Check the floor and make sure the water isn't coming up from a floor drain. If it is, you most likely have a drain blockage. In this case, you will need to snake it, use a hydro-jetter to clear it or call AquaTech Duluth Plumber for a drain cleaning service as soon as possible.
  2. Make sure it is not dripping from the temperature and pressure relief valve. Sometimes they get old and rusty and do not seal anymore. Your water pressure may also be the cause. It will continue to leak if it's too high until the pressure is lowered.
  3. Ensure the water on the floor is not coming from another leak in your plumbing system.
  4. Check for signs of rust on the bottom of the water heater. If it is over eight years old, the water heater itself may be rusted through. In this case, your water heater will need to be replaced.
  5. Check the water supply piping and connections above the water heater for leaks. Sometimes water drips onto the water heater, and it looks like it is leaking.
  6. If you need additional help with diagnosing the problem, don't hesitate to give us a call at 218-341-1596. We are happy to help in any way we can!
